Welcome to iOS 16

It has been a few weeks now, have you upgraded your iPhone to iOS 16?  If not, do so!  Settings > General > Software Update.  If you only see an update to iOS 15, scroll down a bit to find iOS 16.

What’s new?  Lots, but you have to look for it.

Photos:

  • Open a photo, press and hold on the subject of that photo (a person, dog, car or whatever). Let go after a couple of second and tap Copy or Share. Photos has removed the background and you can paste or share that subject with anyone in any manner (email, text, etc.).

  • Tap on Albums at the bottom of the Photos app. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and open Duplicates (it won’t be there if you don’t have any). From there, you can Select in the upper right, then Select All in the upper left and then press Merge in the bottom center. This will take the best photo of the duplicates, add any editing you have done from either dup, notes or keywords from either dup and merge them into one photo with all of the best of all the duplicates of that photo.

  • Also in Albums, you can see Locked, Hidden and Recently Deleted Albums.

  • If you have multiple photos to which you want to apply the same edits, make the edits, tap the three dots in the upper right. Then tap on Copy Edits. Open up another photo, tap the three dots again, and then choose Paste Edits to paste those same edits.

Lock Screen:

  • This is the screen with the big clock on it that you see after you wake, but before you unlock your phone.  You can now have multiple lock screens and several features on each.

  • Wake your phone, press and hold on the lock screen.  Click the + sign in the bottom right to add a new screen.  There are many options presented to you for a quick-add screen.

  • Explore the Photos, People and Photo Shuffle options at the top for some fun!  Once you have a new lock screen you can tap Customize at the bottom to add widgets, change the time font and much more!

  • There is a lot to this feature, play around with it a while and use any lock screen you want throughout your day!

Messages:

  • You can now edit an iMessage!  Within 15 minutes of sending, long press on the message, edit it and press the re-send button to send it again.  Note that if the recipient is not running iOS 16 or if they don’t have an iPhone this won’t work.

  • You can also un-send a message, but only within 2 minutes of sending it.  The same restrictions apply as editing a message.

  • You can now mark a message as unread.  Long press on the conversation then tap Mark as Unread.

  • There is now a Recently Deleted messages where deleted conversations go to live for about 30 days.  To find them, tap on Filters in the upper left of the conversations view, then tap Recently Deleted.

  • Finally, you can report texts as Junk or Spam after you delete them, but it is not clear what this actually does.

Mail:

  • You can Undo Send in the Mail app, but you only have 10 seconds after sending to do so.  Better than not having it at all.  The Undo Send button will be at the bottom of the screen for 10 seconds.

  • You can also schedule an email to be sent later.  Long press on the Send button to see the options.

  • You can have Mail remind you to follow up to an email later if you don’t have time to respond at the moment.  Reply to the email, scroll down and choose Remind Me.

  • Follow up.  If you send an email that is asking for a response from the recipient, Mail will automatically put the message at the top of your Inbox for you to follow up within a day or two.

Weather:

  • Apple has recently bought the Dark Sky company and has integrated their technology into a new built-in Weather app.  The Weather app is finally good, try it!

Dictation:

  • You no longer have to speak punctuation when dictating!

CarPlay:

  • If your vehicle has CarPlay, you will notice an enhanced interface.
