What to do once you get your new iPhone or iPad

Today is the day we begin to receive our new toys for those of us who pre-ordered the new mobile devices from Apple last week!

As such, I thought I would go through the steps of how to set up your new iPhone or iPad.  In addition, I will discuss getting accessories for your new device. Finally, I will provide some tips about how to properly erase your old device for trading in, selling or recycling.

This time of year I am inundated with calls about how to transfer stuff from an old device to a new device.  I am glad to help, but it is so simple to do and I really cannot do it remotely. In fact, I get so many questions about setting up new devices that I posted the instructions in the Help section of my website. This is how to set up your new iPhone or iPad.  Hint: leave your new device in the box for now!!

Now that you have your new device populated with your “stuff” you might want to look for accessories for it.  I recommend using Amazon for accessories.

Cases

I really don’t like spending more than about $15 for an iPhone case, certainly not $50 that Apple charges for their cases.  There is a lot of selection on Amazon.  Things to consider for iPhone cases:

  • Make sure it is made for your specific model.

  • Don’t get a huge case - it kind of defeats all the effort Apple made (and you paid for) making your phone thin and lightweight. Also, huge cases can block the ability to wirelessly charge your new phone.

  • Clear cases tend to turn yellow/orange over a few months of use.

  • Don’t get ones with hooks, loops and other things on the back - it will prevent wireless charging.

Wireless chargers

These are great things to have around the house.  They look like a drink coaster with a wire coming out the back.  You simply lay your iPhone 8 or newer on the coaster and it charges!

Screen protectors - I really like the screen protectors made of glass.  They are cheap on Amazon.  Usually, a 3-pack of them costs less than $10.  Get the ones with a plastic guide to help you align it straight when attaching it to your phone.

Keyboards for iPads

Again, Amazon is a good source. I really like the Apple keyboard/cases.  Yes, they are a bit expensive, but they are really nice.  Again, make sure it fits your exact model (which you can find in Settings > General > About).  In addition to Apple keyboards, Logitech and Zagg make nice ones.

Now that your new device is all set up and accessorized, it is time to erase your old device.  This process is the same for trading it in, giving it to a friend or recycling it.  It is a full and complete erasure.  Here are the instructions, again in my website’s Help section.

You are done.  Congratulations and enjoy your new device!
